There's something about the PS5 studio's new release that manages to hook you right into the games
I never really liked FPS, in general.I wasn't very good at this genre that requires strategy, cooperation and precision, so it was always a work in progress as a video game analyst. However, with the arrival of Marathon everything changed."Play", many of my friends told me."You saw how in the end you will find the point", I heard before the launch of Bungie's new product. And I have to admit that I picked up the title not really knowing what I was doing, but what I never imagined was that it could be one of those games that I look forward to playing every day.
Because there is something about the compound that captures you.At first you do not understand what is happening and you play out of pure ignorance. However, once you understand the basic concepts of the objective contract that you need to fulfill and study the environment of the title map, it turns into a radical that involves you in the rotation of the game, making it impossible to escape it.It takes more arguments to sustain a player base over time, but it is not as bad as it is sold, and those comments seem to come from people who have not given the time it deserves.
That is why this analysis came so late.Because Bungie itself asked us to be patient in order to explore all the options that the title offers, especially by including competitive play and the new Cryoarchive map. This provides more and more credentials to invite players every day to the two classic “games” that have turned into hours of fun. It now remains to see what its development is and what it has to offer compared to what has been seen so far.I'll tell you all about it in our full Marathon PS5 Pro review.
Table of contents
Bungie has many factions to accompany you in this marathon.
Since Marathon was new to escaping shooters, his first trip was indeed difficult. This is a game that not only captures the essence of Bungie games, but also requires a lot of patience and the ability to face what it has to offer. It's an exercise in resilience, where you have to learn to make mistakes and often lose the loot you've collected in order to master the basic mechanics of each game. This is not a game that can be completed in a few hours, but it requires a lot of processes to reach the goal, and this can be the biggest obstacle in the way to catch the attention of new players.
Because every weapon, every modifier, and even every contract requires careful study to get the most out of the offer. At first Marathon comes across as a difficult game to understand, you actually have no direction, you are almost blind to all the information presented to you.Different types of weapons, the rare color scheme common in this type of video games, hundreds of modifiers, power-ups and items that help you make improvements... and as if this were not enough, the decisive factor in understanding the plot of the game and being able to progress logically comes into play: factions.
At first, names like CyberKami, Nukeloric, Arachen, etc. had nothing to do with first-time marathon runners, but over time, they became crucial in everything that happened in the proposition. As you fulfill contracts with certain requirements of these groups, you increase the level of contact with them, which allows you to make new improvements to your inventory: better armor, the possibility to purchase new weapons, high-speed looting and resurrection of your allies, in short, a wide range of possibilities giving you a range of customization options.Progress is the central point of the game, but it also requires a certain amount of persistence to complete certain secondary orders that allow you to access new master contracts and thus reach VIP levels for each faction.
To achieve this goal, the player has different classes (types of characters, so that we understand each other) in which it is necessary to travel.of the three players who can be part of the team, to achieve the goals and the symbioses of their classes are necessary to protect and help each other. This is one of those games that can be enjoyed in a group, and although the title allows you to work alone using the Rook frame, its complexity and difficulty to get angry, it is a choice to enjoy over several sessions.
Addictive shooter gameplay and dynamic, consistent gameplay
One of Bungie's greatest features over the years has been providing fun and addictive gameplay that captivates players from the very beginning. They already proved themselves to be true gun wizards when the first part of Halo arrived, which they proved in Destiny.A playable progression is a real delight for lovers of this type of game, as the marathon race couldn't be shorter.Shooting each weapon is fun, and among them it offers a very different experience: explosion, courage, recovery ... Everything is taken care of in the smallest details, which makes it feel realistic and always contributes, which allows players to adapt to the chosen game mode.
Something to add to the race, which is a game in itself.During the 25 minutes, the players must fulfill the objectives of the engagements (elimination of enemies, remove objects, get secret information...) and exit before the end of the countdown. Also, even if some of the conditions of the contract are violated, all the equipment you carry at that time will be lost, so the damage is really big.In this sense, the risk of entering a land full of enemy inhabitants can be very high, so every move in the map must be planned and coordinated with the group. The Outpost map is crazy, because the dangers are constant and often security keys are needed to open some rooms and be able to move forward, so looting is always necessary to achieve the goals.
All this without taking into account that the team you play in is not the only one in each game. The robotics threat in UESC can be a big challenge, especially the leaders with purple and gold shields are very difficult to deal with, but the real challenge that adds sauce to each race is the other players you can find in every corner of the maps. This type of PvP conflict is amazing, with specific tactics and allows you to see how different shots affect the game.It can be very frustrating at times due to differences in user equipment, but if you get past the hurdle, whatever they find can be yours if you have access to your research.in many cases it is useful to argue, but in others it is better to try to avoid it in order not to lose valuable assets or to continue to move forward with the goals of the contract.
This PvEvP development is the real magic of Marathon. The sensations it provides at any time are dynamic and certainly tense, because the moment you hear the shots of other players in the distance, you know that a difficult moment is approaching, forcing you to measure every next step. This defeat-triumph cycle is what really keeps you trapped in your universe.Regarding Bungie's game development and progression systems.Maybe it just lacks a larger number of maps and game modes to offer more variety in that aspect, but that's not to say it's a game lacking in content.
Cryoarchive Madness for the most demanding
You've already learned everything you need to know about the Marathon universe, you've spent dozens of hours diving into this exciting loop, customizing it to suit the three available maps. You think you own the offer and nothing can stop you... until Bungie gives you a set of temporary missions developed by the Cryoarchive.A new territory that allows you to find the most amazing resources, but hides a huge danger that you may not be ready for.Because the Cryofile is the biggest challenge introduced in the marathon so far, requiring equipment worth more than 5000 in-game currency.
The area is a complete labyrinthine craze that forces players to get the best of themselves through different levels of security unlocked through good teamwork. They are very different games from the rest of the proposal, because they are full of high doses of action and constant threats, securing a significant loot by striking the boss, unlocking new types of alien weapons that aim to be different in the next steps in future seasons.
In fact, the inclusion of Cryofile opens the door to hope for what Bungie can offer in the future.Because this method of changing experience can be the first contact for everything the studio now wants to write if it has the support that wants to make it one of the benchmark extraction shooters today. The challenge is very big and it will not be an easy task, even more so given the current state of the sector, but it certainly gives the idea that they have the necessary tools to achieve this.
Un estilo artístico raro, pero que resulta embriagador
If Marathon has an engaging gameplay that will get you addicted little by little, its artistic style is not far behind either. This is one of those games with a lot of visual personality, even though it may feel strange at first.Because it's not usual for the color movement in an extraction shooter to be so striking and colorful, but it's part of the core that stands out in everything that makes up the universe of the title. The adaptations have been taken care of down to the smallest detail to create this futuristic atmosphere while offering a relaxed tone that at many times could almost be described as cartoony. It is unique in its genre and that makes it really special.
Additionally, the resolution achieved by the title on PS5 Pro magnifies this artwork, native 4K can handle the game at a completely stable 60fps at all times, which is appreciated in this type of offering that requires great movement speed and precision in aiming movements.Undoubtedly, it is one of the titles that managed to capture the potential of the advanced version of the current generation of the Sony console.
Last but not least, Marathon also pays great attention to sound design. This is because the game is basically designed to be played in cooperative multiplayer mode.So it's understandable that players will love the headphone experience. Therefore, ambient sound is necessary to know where UESC units are or enemy runners in the vicinity. To make each voice believable and true to what is represented in the game, on the other hand, the title has good Spanish dubbing to greatly enhance the experience.get more involved
- Totally addictive gameplay
- Great shot.
- Equal parts excitement and fun.
- PvEvP dynamic is sensational...
- ...even if it is sometimes very frustrating.
- It can be difficult for many to understand.
- Lack of more options for players.
Final evaluation of the Marathon
Marathon managed to win me over, even though I wasn't a fan of the genre it belonged to.It was a great experience to enjoy it with friends who probably contributed a few tenths to the proposal, but it is not immune to the good work done by Bungie to create such an addictive gameplay loop.It remains to be seen what the studio can do to keep players from leaving the title over time, but its first encounter was so appealing to me that I cannot escape this marathon.
